Raleigh, N.C. -- The fourth-ranked softball team was eliminated from the NCAA Championship Tournament Sunday after falling to second-ranked Muskingum 9-1. The Muskies scored six unearned runs in the top of the first inning to take control of the game.
The Bombers got on the board in the bottom of the first when junior catcher Hannah Shalett (Shepaug Valley/Bridgewater, Conn.) scored from third on a wild pitch to make it a 6-1 game, but were unable to get any closer as Muskingum (37-10) added runs in the final three innings for the 9-1 final.
Shalett and senior outfielder Leigh Bonkowski (The Williams School/Willimantic, Conn.) were named to the all-tournament team.
Ithaca's 40-7 record set new school records for wins and winning percentage (.844). The Bombers also set new team records for batting average (.344), consecutive shutout innings (55.0), consecutive shutouts (eight), consecutive wins (18), fielding percentage (.967), hits (429), runs scored (325), RBIs (290), shutouts (20), stolen bases (108), triples (20) and walks (142).
